Heritage roofing · Walthamstow E17
Gable & Crown is a third-generation family firm laying slate, clay and lead across North-East London since 1962. Surveyed honestly, quoted fixed, and guaranteed for ten years.
What we do
No subcontracted gangs, no “roofline specialists” who have never lifted a slate. The people who quote your roof are the people who build it.
Full re-slates and sympathetic repairs in new and reclaimed Welsh slate. Courses set true, verges pointed tight, and ridge lines you could sight a level along.
Handmade and machine-made clay tiles matched to London’s Victorian and Edwardian stock — including profiles rescued from our own salvage racks.
Sand-cast and milled lead, Code 4 to 6, dressed by hand. Step flashings, valleys, box gutters and bay tops that stay watertight for decades.
Rubber and fibreglass systems laid to proper falls on insulated build-ups, with trims and outlets detailed correctly. A flat roof done once, done right.
Stacks rebuilt, capped and repointed — in lime mortar where the brickwork asks for it. Pots, cowls and bird guards fitted while the scaffold is up.
Cast-iron-style aluminium, uPVC or timber — cleared, repaired or renewed, with the fall checked along every run so water goes where it should.
Storm damage, a sudden leak, a slipped ridge. We answer the emergency line around the clock, make your roof safe and watertight, then come back in daylight to do the proper repair.
The craft
Frank Cowley slated his first roof on Orford Road in 1962. His grandson runs the yard today, and the method hasn’t changed: look properly, price honestly, build carefully, and stand behind the work.
We inspect from a ladder or tower, not from the pavement. You get photographs and an honest written report — repair where we can, replace only where we must.
One itemised price, valid for ninety days. No provisional sums that balloon once the scaffold is up, and no pressure to decide on the doorstep.
Our own roofers, never subcontracted gangs. The materials named on your quote are the materials on your roof. We sweep the site every evening and run a magnet over the garden for nails.
We walk you through the finished work with before-and-after photographs, then hand over your ten-year workmanship guarantee in writing — transferable if you sell the house.
Where we work
The yard sits on Brindle Yard, ten minutes’ walk from Walthamstow Village, and most of our roofs are within four miles of it — close enough to keep an eye on them for years after the scaffold comes down.
Somewhere a little further out? Ask. We take on the right jobs across North and East London when the roof deserves it.
Word of mouth
Most of our work arrives the old way — one roof recommending the next, street by street.
They re-slated our Victorian terrace in reclaimed Welsh slate and matched the original diamond band along the ridge. Scaffold down in three weeks, not a tile out of place. The roof looks like it has always been there — which is precisely the point.
A ceiling stain turned out to be failed lead around the chimney. They photographed everything from the scaffold, explained the fix in plain English, and the price didn’t move a penny from the quote.
A storm took half a dozen ridge tiles off on a Friday night. Someone answered the phone at eleven, the roof was sheeted by morning, and the proper repair was finished inside the week.
£5m public liability cover, and every roofer on the books — never cash-in-hand strangers.
In writing, on every job — and it transfers to the new owners if you sell.
No call-out fee, no provisional sums, no surprises once the scaffold is up.
Get in touch
Tell us what the roof is doing — or what you’re worried it might be about to do. We’ll take a proper look and give you an honest answer, even when the honest answer is “leave it alone for now”.
A few details and we’ll ring you back to arrange a convenient time. No obligation, no call-out fee.
On a live site, your survey request would now be on its way to the Gable & Crown office, and someone would ring you back within one working day.
This, however, is a demonstration website — Gable & Crown Roofing is a fictional business, and no enquiry has been sent anywhere.
